Personal Attributes of a waiter

Personal Attributes is related to the personal well being of a waiter, which includes two aspects.

1. Personal hygiene and

2. Personal appearance

Personal Hygiene

The personal hygiene is all about the being excellent in his/ her physical well being. The following points should be pondered for the personal hygiene.

1. The hair of the waiting staff should be trimmed very short, especially from the sides and back. That gives a clean look.

2. The skin of the waiting staff should be free of diseases such as acne, pimples etc. and also free of cuts, rashes etc. The skin should be smooth. The consultation of the skin specialist become mandatory if any abnormalities spoted on the skin.

3. The hands of the waiting staff should be given special care, because they are constantly under the scrutiny of guests. Nails should be well trimmed, and kept clean. There should not be dirt under the nails. Washing of hands is a must after using the toilets. Make sure that the waiter is keeping the hands free of dust and dirt, as he/ she handling the food. Dirty hands causes cross contamination.

4. Face of the waiter should be pleasant. Over make up should be avoided. Face hairs should be vaxed and removed. eye brows and eye lashes should be done properly for Waiteresses.

5. Teeth should be cleaned properly before the work starts. Mouth wash or mouth freshner may be used. Regular visit to the dentist is a good practice to keep the teeth healthy.

6. Body deodorant or anti perspirant should be used to avoid body odors. But a waiter should not use shart smelling body spray, which will take away the smell the the dishes that he/she serves.

Personal Appearance

Personal appearance is very important for a waiter, because he/she should be at his/her best during the duty time. The following points should be kept in mind for a good personal appearance.

1. The uniform should be well fit the body. It should not be sloppy. The uniform should be well pressed. All buttons should be put properly. Special attention should be given to hand cuffs and collers, which should be clean.

2. Minimum jewellery should be used by a waiter. The wrist watch should tight fitting and formal in nature. Finger rings should be one maximum per hand. Bangles, wrist bands etc should be avoided. because they would act as a barrier to the service performance.

3. No munching is allowed in front of the guests, or during service.

4. The posture of the waiting staff is very important. Always stand erect and stand on both legs. A little bend while service is advisable.

5. The Shoe should be polished and shining at all times. The shoes should be well fit to the legs. Use a proper fit socks while using shoes.

6. The name tags and other uniform accessories should be worn properly as per the management guidelines.
